Start by measuring the real footprint of the bed frame (not just the mattress size) and the clear walking space you’ll have around it. Velvet upholstered frames often include thicker side rails, a padded headboard, and wider legs or panels that make the overall dimensions larger than a standard queen or king mattress.
Measure your available floor area where the bed will sit, then compare it to the bed frame’s overall dimensions: total width (side rail to side rail) and total length (headboard to footboard). A queen mattress is 60″ x 80″ and a king is 76″ x 80″, but upholstered frames can add several inches on each side and at the ends.
Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction above the bed area (ceiling, fan blades, sloped ceiling line, or a window trim that overlaps the headboard). Then compare it to the headboard height. This matters for tall, channel-tufted, or wingback velvet headboards that can visually and physically dominate smaller rooms.
Mark the bed’s outline on the floor with painter’s tape and measure the remaining space on both sides and at the foot. Aim for roughly 24–36 inches of walkway where possible (especially on the main side you enter/exit). If you’re adding nightstands, measure their widths and confirm you can still open drawers and walk comfortably.
Before ordering, measure entry door width, hallway width, stairwell clearance, and any tight corners. Upholstered headboards and side rails can be bulky, and some frames arrive in large cartons even when assembly is required.
Velvet frames can sit low or have thick rails that change how high the mattress feels. Measure desired bed height (floor to top of mattress) and check under-bed clearance if you need storage bins or easier cleaning access.

Try to keep 24–36 inches for main walkways, and at least enough clearance to fully open dresser drawers and swing doors. If space is tight, prioritize clearance on the side you use most and at the foot of the bed.
